EU Data Regulations Effect US-Based Meetings

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) on european union flag with date

The European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will go into effect on May 25, 2018. Internet hacking and phishing have become a big problem, causing the adoption of this regulation to help protect the privacy of EU citizens.

GDPR is not limited to meetings held in the EU. If a US meeting is being advertised to or attended by a EU citizen, you must adhere to the policy. Basic information that conference planners collect from attendees are mandated by the regulation. Some of the data that is being monitored includes:

  • Ethnic background
  • Allergic reactions
  • Food preferences

If the Information Commissioners Office determines that your organization failed to meet GDPR regulations the organization can be fined up to 4% of annual global sales or $24.76 million in US Dollars, whichever is higher.
